Twitch Film  has word that Smash Cut, Lee Darmarbre's tribute to Herschell Gordon Lewis's brand of didactic schlock, will be released DTV on March 23rd by Media Blasters' "Fresh Meat" imprint. The film stars Sasha Grey, who most people will remember as the prostitute protag in Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience while other people (you know who you are) will know here as a real-life porn star. She won the Adult Video News (AVN)'s Female Performer of the Year (2008) and Cross-over Performer of the Year (2009). Which is saying something, right?

It's especially strange considering that she's the sex symbol in Darmarbre's tribute to Lewis. A college professor turned drive-in king, Lewis was dedicated to giving his audience what he knew they wanted: tits, ass and gore. Season it with a hefty dose of pseudo-intellectual provocation, as in The Wizard of Gore, essentially a manifesto on how Lewis considered himself to be a hypnotist lulling the masses into complacence, and voila, you've got Lewis's style in a nutshell.

Judging by the trailer for Smash Cut, it looks like Darmarbre's got that formula down pat, although thankfully he's treating it as a formula and not anything more artistically vital than that: "We've got to show them the suffering and the hurt!" Right. As trashy as Lewis's cinema is, Smash Cut may have found a way to soften its cringe-worthy provocations into mindless grindhouse nostalgia. That's no mean feat. Sasha Grey's alarmingly seamless transformation from adult film star to mainstream entertainment brand is finally complete with news of a forthcoming album from her Industrial/Noise project aTelecine. As you can probably glean from the band's name, which might be the most fatal element on the Periodic Scale or an ancient term for sacrificing baby animals, the project is of the atonal and brooding ilk with Grey contributing vocals as well as synthesizer, tape loop and guitar work.

For those who like their porn star cum actress/musicians (hello!) with a hint of metal, the band's debut album, "A Cassette Tape Culture", drops April 27th. Media Blasters and Fever Dreams have officially announced the DVD release of Smash Cut, coming on March 23. The film will arrive under Shriek Show's new "Fresh Meat" label. Smash Cut stars Sasha Grey as television news celebrity April Carson who hires private investigator Isaac Beaumonde (Jesse Buck) to help find her missing sister, a stripper known as Gigi Spot (Jennilee Murray). Following a bloodstained trail, Carson goes undercover and auditions for a role in a low budget horror movie. Soon, she shockingly discovers that the movie’s director, Able Whitman (David Hess), is not only the killer but that he has utilized her sister’s body parts to pump up the ‘realism’ for his new production! When Whitman requires more ‘props’ for his film, he sets off on a crimson-splattered killing spree. Now, only intrepid reporter April and the celebrated private detective stand between the demented director and his unquenchable thirst for reel slaughter at 24 frames per second!

Co-starring in Smash Cut is David Hess from Wes Craven’s original The Last House on the Left and Swamp Thing. Also featuring a cameo appearance by the godfather of gore himself, Herschell Gordon Lewis (Blood Feast). Inspired by the career of the godfather of gore Herschell Gordon Lewis, Smash Cut is director Demarbre’s riotous homage to B-movie horror filmmaking.

Sasha Grey, porn’s flavor of the month, was one of the keynote speakers during “Sex Week at Yale.” Grey’s star is currently in such ascendancy that her publicist rejected comparisons to the industry’s favorite daughter, Jenna Jameson, claiming that Sasha has already achieved more. There may be some truth in it: At 21, she has won a clean sweep of adult entertainment awards, played the lead role in Steven Soderbergh’s “The Girlfriend Experience” and started her own production company. Married woman, hardcore pornstar and self-proclaimed feminist, Sasha Grey bears all for scene:

Even if you're someone who gives the world of pornography a wide berth, there's a pretty good chance that you've heard of Sasha Grey, who's had the term "mainstream crossover" applied to her so many times that it's a wonder you can't see it on her forehead.

While Grey's next project isn't necessarily "mainstream," it is a crossover. Grey is a member of the noise band aTelecine, whose debut album is being released this April. According to the band's Myspace, Grey's contributions include vocals, synth, tape loops, guitar, and reverse cowgirl. JK Sasha, JK.

Sex is one thing. Enjoying the company of a beautiful young lady at some of the finer Manhattan restaurants or waking up with her the next to her in a luxury hotel the morning after a perfect date is a whole other. Now you can pay for both of these different experiences at the same time in a package known as "The Girlfriend Experience." Steven Soderbergh's exploration of this experience is not only beautifully shot but it is also oddly just as removed as it is engaging. The same can probably be said about the experience itself.The recent works of Steven Soderburgh have left a lot to the imagination. The progressively less endearing and logical Ocean's Eleven series of films. Or the astonishingly pretentious Bubble and Che. Add the fact the the Girlfriend Experience was from the writing team behind Ocean's Thirteen and the remake of Walking Tall....well one seemingly had the recipe for disaster!

Except...

The Girlfriend Experience is nothing short of both a return to form for Mr. Soderbergh and a revelation as a film. And it is reminder that some director's may work best within the medium of a smaller personal film. The film is a ostensibly about an escort and the rogues gallery of lonely men who frequent her as a band-aid for their sadness. but, then Mr. Soderbergh pulls back to reveal an exploration of emotional, spiritual and financial loneliness. Using the backdrop of the impending elections of the 2008 election, the film is set in the high powered wealthy world of Wall Street in the Pre-bailout era. Where money and power flowed.

PETA Ads are always pretty risque with their outspoken "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur." Did this new ad with porn star Sasha Grey go to far?

Let's just say, we'd rather wear fur than look at someone's butt crack. Ewwww. People for the Ethical Treatment of Other People Say, please cancel this ad! Worthy cause but unworthy advertisement. "Too much sex can be a good thing. Have your pets speyed or neutered."

Peta has decided to use porn star Sasha Grey as their new spokesperson to help encourage people to get their pets spayed and neutered. In regards to the Peta ad, my question is, what does porn have to do with pets? Unless, we're talking beastiality, which we are not.

Its one thing to use a spokesperson who may have a strong concern for an issue but the ad is absolutely uncalled for. What is wrong with our media filter here? Do people need to use sex to help turn their brains on so that they can make decisions about their everyday lives? The Peta ad is a photo of Sasha Grey with her butt crack showing posing on a bed.

Our (ahem) good friends at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have a new ad campaign, and it's actually kinda funny: They are using a porn star to promote having pets spayed and neutered. It's a nice change of pace after listening to crusty, old Bob Barker tell us to get our cats' tubes tied for the last several decades, but a few prudes aren't diggin' it. By a few, we mean the majority, according to a recent poll from the research group MediaCurves. The campaign features a picture of porn star (oh wait, sorry, "adult entertainer") Sasha Grey with a message about spaying and neutering pets (see above). We would argue that too much sex with Sasha Grey could hardly be considered a bad thing, but too much sex in the ad itself is what has people peeved.

According to the survey, an ironic 69 percent of those polled find the ad at least somewhat offensive. If the majority finds the ad offensive, its members should probably avoid some of Sasha's films, particularly ones with titles like Rich Little Bitch, Fuck For Dollars 3, or  Gang Bang My Face. The ad may have lost PETA a few supporters, too. According to the survey, those who had viewed PETA in an "extremely favorable" light went from 13 percent to 10 percent after people had seen the ad.
